A typically
congested scene along Chawri Bazar in the Chandni Chowk area,
March 2006. Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and busiest markets in central north
Delhi, India. The area is the historically important Shahjahanabad between the Laal Quila (The Red Fort) and Fateh
Puri Masjid. With the most famous mosque of Delhi Jama Masjid
(Delhi) in the vicinity, along with Sis Ganj Gurudwara, Jain
Mandir and a lot of small temples, the place witnesses a
genuine cultural harmony.
Chandni Chowk's speciality is the variety of its markets and
their Indian-ness. From authentic Indian food, delicacies and
sweets of more than 1000 kinds, to sarees with chikan, zaree
work. There are lots of narrow lanes with many shops selling
books, clothing, shoes and leather goods, electronic and
consumer goods and what not. The area, even more so than the
rest of the city, is congested. This is also a good area for
window shopping. It is the location of the original Haldiram's.
A particular local delicacy are the jalebis, which are fried
in pure ghee (clarified butter).
About Chandni Chowk
Chandni Chowk, the commercial area of the Mughal’s entirely
designed with great love and care by Jahanara Begum,
Shahjahan’s favorite daughter, has now transformed itself into
a colorful shopping area, which is one of the country’s best
known wholesale markets. Chandni Chowk or Silver Square is the
main street of Old Delhi, congested but colourful shopping
bazaar. At its eastern end (towards the Red Fort) is a
Digambara (sky-clad) Jain Temple, a Birds hospital, a Shiva
temple and the Gurudwara Sis Ganj dedicated to the 9th Sikh
Guru Teg Bahadur who was beheaded here by Emperor Aurangzeb.
Fatehpuri Masjid, built by one of Shahjahan’s wives, marks the
western end. The bazaar is one of the largest and busiest
wholesale and retail markets where one can find almost every
thing - clothes, fabrics, watches, shoes, books, gems and
jewellery so on and so forth.
